Why does the U.S. celebrate it in September?

The first Labor Day parade took place on September 5, 1882 in New York, organized by the Central Labor Union. In 1894, after the Pullman strikes, President Grover Cleveland signed the law making it a federal holiday. Choosing September avoided associations with the May 1 protests.
