The New Format: 48 Teams

The most radical change is the tournament expansion. Instead of 8 groups of 4, the 2026 World Cup will feature 12 groups of 4 teams. The top two from each group, plus the 8 best third-placed teams, advance to a Round of 32. This means 104 total matches (up from 64), spread across 39 days of competition.
