Why is it celebrated on January 6?

The date commemorates the Epiphany: the arrival of the Three Wise Men at the Bethlehem manger to worship the baby Jesus, guided by the Star of Bethlehem. According to Christian tradition, Melchior offered gold (royalty), Gaspar frankincense (divinity) and Balthazar myrrh (humanity).
